The company has now officially started a test that will remove public visibility of Like, reaction and video view counts from people’s posts and ads across Facebook.

Google and Facebook’s latest efforts to ‘save’ journalism are already getting eye rolls – NZ Herald

Google said this week that it is tweaking its algorithms and the guidelines for its human search quality raters in a manner that will allow original reporting – news discovered by the publication and not aggregated from another outlet – to obtain a higher ranking on its search pages and maintain that ranking for a longer time.

That follows Facebook last month saying would begin offering several major news outlets as much as US$3 million ($4.7m) a year to license headlines and previews of articles, according to the Wall Street Journal, for use in a new feature called News Tab that is curated in part by veteran news editors.

FBI Ordered to Expunge AntiWar.com Threat Assessment

Justin Raimondo and Eric Garris sued the agency in San Francisco federal court in 2013, claiming they learned from a Freedom of Information Act request that the FBI conducted a “threat assessment” of them but wouldn’t tell them any more about it.

Following a nearly four-year battle, the FBI in 2017 agreed to turn over records it created when it spied on the journalists and pay $299,000 to settle their attorneys’ fees.

U.S. Unleashes Military to Fight Fake News, Disinformation

(Bloomberg) — Fake news and social media posts are such a threat to U.S. security that the Defense Department is launching a project to repel “large-scale, automated disinformation attacks,” as the top Republican in Congress blocks efforts to protect the integrity of elections.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants custom software that can unearth fakes hidden among more than 500,000 stories, photos, video and audio clips. If successful, the system after four years of trials may expand to detect malicious intent and prevent viral fake news from polarizing society.
